OneUp and Wolftooth - Pump and Multitool Comparison

Two Trail Tools, One Decision
The OneUp EDC pump and the Wolf Tooth 8-Bit Pack Pliers are two of the most popular "always in your pack" tools on the market. Both solve the same basic problem: giving you a reliable pump and multitool system without carrying a bunch of loose tools. But they take very different approaches.
The video below goes through both tools side by side. If you want the written breakdown and our take, keep reading.
I'm a long time user of the OneUp EDC tool and pump. I purchased the Wolftooth 8 Bit Pack Pliers and 40CC pump out of curiosity and appreciation of Wolftooth's design ethos. In this video I compare the pros and cons of each.

OneUp EDC Pump
What it is: A mini pump that stores inside your steerer tube, paired with a multitool that plugs into the top cap. The whole system hides inside your bike so you don't have to carry it in a pack.
Pros:
- Lives on the bike. You literally can't forget it.
- Pump performance is solid for its size. Gets the job done trailside.
- The multitool component covers the basics (Allen keys, Torx, chain breaker).
- Clean, integrated look. No straps or mounts cluttering your frame.
Cons:
- Requires a compatible steerer tube and top cap setup. Not all bikes work.
- The pump is small, so inflating a tire fully takes effort.
- If you forget to check it's there, it can rattle in the steerer tube over time.
Wolf Tooth 8-Bit Pack Pliers
What it is: A compact multitool built around a set of master-link pliers, with modular bit storage. Designed to live in your pack or pocket.
Pros:
- The pliers are the standout feature. Breaking a chain or reconnecting a master link without pliers is miserable. These make it simple.
- Modular bit system lets you customize which tools you carry.
- Works with any bike. No compatibility concerns.
- Premium build quality. Wolf Tooth doesn't mess around with materials.
Cons:
- No pump included. You still need a separate pump solution.
- You have to remember to put it in your pack.
- Higher price point than basic multitools.
What We Recommend at Loam Goat
Honestly? Both. They solve different problems. The OneUp system is perfect if you hate carrying a pack and want everything on the bike. The Wolf Tooth pliers are the best chain tool on the market and belong in every trail kit regardless of what else you carry.
If we had to pick one, the Wolf Tooth 8-Bit gets the edge for riders on the North Shore and similar chunky terrain. Chain problems happen out here, and having proper pliers instead of trying to fiddle with a master link using a stick and some swear words is worth the space in your pack.
For your trail toolkit, we'd suggest: a pump (OneUp EDC or a standard mini), the Wolf Tooth pliers, a spare master link, a tube or tire plug kit, and a multi-tool with the basics. That covers 95% of trailside mechanicals.
