What brake pads fit Shimano XT M8120?

The M8120 takes Shimano's 4-piston pad, sold under codes like D02S, D03S, H03A, H03C, N03A and N04C. All one shape, different compounds. Our 4-piston pads are that same shape, and they fit the whole family:

Best compound for XT M8120

Shimano puts these calipers on everything from trail bikes to e-MTBs. The right compound depends on your riding. We carry three:

Sintered, The longest-wearing pad we carry and the one for wet BC winters. Grit eats softer pads, sintered shrugs it off. Loudest of the three. Check your rotors aren't resin-only first, some lightweight Shimano rotors are.

Gravity, The long-life pick. Slower to bed in, noisier while it settles, more rides per set than Trail once it's in. My pick for most M8120 riders in mixed conditions.

Trail, The quiet one. Beds in fast, goes silent soonest, wears a bit quicker for it. More hills and XC-type riding? You'll really like Trail.

Straight talk: Trail and Gravity feel very close at the lever, so pick on bed-in, noise and lifespan, not power. Burning through Gravity pads too fast for your liking? That's your cue to go Sintered.

Finned or standard pads?

Our Shimano 4-piston pads come in three configurations, in every compound:

  • Standard, Regular backing plate. Right for most riders.
  • Finned, Pads plus fin plates. The fins pull heat out of the caliper on sustained descents. Worth it for bike park laps, shuttle days, and heavy or e-bike setups.
  • Finned refill, Fresh pads for riders already running our fin plates.

Honest answer: most riders don't need fins. Fins earn their keep where brakes stay hot: long Shore and Whistler descents, shuttle days, heavier riders, e-MTBs. The park loves to eat pads.

Two details you won't find on the box: the fins fit every caliper in the family, Saint included, even if they look oversized in the photos. And finned backing plates are thinner than standard, that's how they clear the caliper. If fins don't work out, I'll swap them for standard ones.

XT M8120 vs M8100: don't mix them up

The most common ordering mix-up with XT brakes. M8120 is the 4-piston caliper and takes the D/N-type pad. M8100 is the 2-piston and takes the smaller G-type and J-type pad. They don't interchange. The number is stamped on the caliper body, facing the spokes, so check before you order. I've watched riders realize mid-order that their 8100s were actually 8120s. No shame in it. FAQ

Do XT M8120 and XTR M9120 use the same pads?

Yes. Every current Shimano 4-piston caliper shares the D/N-type pad shape, Deore up to XTR, plus Saint and Zee.

Are Shimano D02S and N04C pads the same shape?

Yes, one shape. The letters track Shimano's compound and backing, not fit. Coming off N04C, Shimano's metal pad? Sintered is the closest match, Gravity an excellent alternative.

Will these pads fit the new XT BR-M8220?

Yes. The newer XT BR-M8220 and XTR BR-M9220 4-piston calipers take the same D/N-type shape as the M8120 and M9120.

Can I run sintered pads with my Ice Tech rotors?

Check the rotor, not the brake. Some lightweight Shimano rotors are marked resin-only, and sintered pads will wear them out early. Most trail and enduro rotors handle sintered fine.

Why do my new pads squeal?

Usually they aren't bedded in yet, and Gravity stays vocal longer than Trail. Still loud after bed-in? Pull the pads, light sand, alcohol wipe, rub the braking faces together under running water for 20 seconds, reinstall. Sand and wipe the rotor too. That sorts most of them.
