Measured in the lab
Heat is what makes a brake fade halfway down the trail.
237°C
Peak pad temperature for Trail in a 60-second lab brake test at 35 km/h. The coolest of the seven pads on the rig. The hottest reached 386 °C.
102%
Braking force Trail held at the end of that run, measured against where it started. It finished stronger than it began, 719 N up to 735 N.
Report 23-0516-01, 2023, to ISO 4210. Run by our pad supplier’s own laboratory, not an independent test house. Shimano XT caliper, 160 mm rotor, 60 seconds of continuous braking at 35 km/h. Sintered was not in this report.
The five things riders ask us before they buy
Answered in order of how often they come up.
Trail is the quietest of the three. Bed them in on a gentle stretch of road before you ride them hard.
Trail for quiet and modulation, Gravity for wet bite and life, Sintered for the longest life.
Two pairs, which does the front and the rear. Magura MT5 and MT7 take four pads per wheel, so that set is eight.
Three Shimano families have a finned option: pads plus fin plates, or a refill of just the pads if you are keeping your fins.
Which of the three should you run?
Trail |
Gravity |
Sintered |
|
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise | Quietest | Quiet | Loudest |
| Bed-in | Quickest | Quick | Longest |
| Life | Shortest | Longer | Longest |
| Power feel | Ramps up | Ramps up | Linear |
| Wet bite | Good | Bites hardest | Good |
| Resin-only rotors | Yes | Yes | No |
| Heat | Insulates caliper | Insulates caliper | Conducts into caliper |
Every compound is the same price and the same fit, so the only question is feel. Wet bite and heat behaviour are from the lab report above. Noise, bed-in and feel are our own assessment and our riders’, not lab measurements.
Step one, always
Find the pad that fits your caliper.
Pick your brake brand and model. Not every caliper is made in all three compounds, and the finder will tell you which ones yours is.
Questions riders actually send us
Will these fit my brakes?
Pick your brand and model in the finder above and it returns the exact pad for your caliper. If you are not sure what you have, email support@loamgoat.com with a photo and Ian will tell you.
How many pads do I need?
Two pairs for most calipers, which does the front and the rear. Magura MT5 and MT7 calipers take four pads per wheel, so that set is eight pads, and it is still one order.
Will they squeal?
Trail is the quietest of the three compounds. Any new pad needs bedding in, so do twenty or so firm stops from walking pace on a quiet road before you ride them properly. See our bed-in guide.
Can I run them on resin-only rotors?
Trail and Gravity, yes. Sintered needs a rotor rated for metal pads, so check what is printed on your rotor first.
What if I pick the wrong one?
Inside 60 days you can send them back for a full refund, even installed and ridden (you cover return postage), or keep them and we will mail you a different compound, free in Canada. Get in touch and we will sort it out.
