Magura Brake Pad Compatibility Guide: MT5, MT7, MT8, MT Trail, Louise (2025)
Share
Magura brakes are known for incredible stopping power and reliability. But their pad system can be confusing, different calipers use different pad types, and Magura's naming convention (Type 7, Type 8, 9.P, 9.C) isn't exactly intuitive.
This guide breaks down exactly which pads fit which Magura brakes.

Shop Magura Brake Pads →The Simple Rule: 2-Piston vs. 4-Piston
Magura's modern brakes fall into two categories:
| Caliper Type | Brake Models | Pad Type |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Piston | MT2, MT4, MT6, MT8 | Type 7 (7.P, 7.C, 7.R) |
| 4-Piston | MT5, MT7, MT Trail, CT5, Gustav Pro | Type 8/9 (8.P, 8.R, 9.P, 9.C) |
Key Point: The MT8 is a 2-piston brake (despite the higher number), while the MT5 and MT7 are 4-piston. Don't let the names confuse you!
4-Piston Brake Pads (MT5, MT7, MT Trail)
Compatible with:
- Magura MT5, MT5 eSTOP (e-bike)
- Magura MT7, MT7 Pro, MT7 HC
- Magura MT Trail Sport, MT Trail Carbon
- Magura CT5
- Magura Gustav M, Gustav Pro
Want to run a performance (4 piece pad) on your Magura pads and they came with 2 piece pads? Apart from the pads you'll need our Magura Performance Pad Bolts to make the switch.
💡 Running MT5 or MT7 brakes?
We stock sintered and organic pads for all 4-piston Magura models. 2 pairs included — that's 4 individual pads per caliper.
Magura Pad Type Codes Explained:
| Code | Compound | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 8.P / 9.P | Performance (Sintered) | Wet conditions, e-bikes, DH |
| 8.R / 7.R | Race (Organic) | XC, dry conditions |
| 9.C / 7.C | Comfort (Organic) | Quiet operation, light use |
2-Piston Brake Pads (MT2, MT4, MT6, MT8)
Compatible with:
- Magura MT2
- Magura MT4, MT4 eSTOP
- Magura MT6
- Magura MT8, MT8 SL, MT8 Pro
The 2-piston calipers use Type 7 pads. Despite the MT8 having the highest number in the series, it's a lightweight 2-piston brake designed for XC racing and not a more powerful 4-piston brake.
Legacy Magura Brakes
Older Magura brakes use different pad shapes:
- Marta, Marta SL: Uses older style pads (not compatible with MT series)
- Julie: Uses older style pads
- Louise: Uses older style pads
Sintered vs. Organic: Which Compound?
Choose Sintered or Gravity (Performance/8.P/9.P) If:
- You ride in wet, muddy conditions (hello, BC!)
- You want pads that last longer
- You ride an e-bike (more weight = more heat)
- You ride long descents or bike parks
Choose Trail or City (Race/Comfort) If:
- You ride mostly in dry conditions
- You want quieter brakes
- You're an XC rider prioritizing weight
- You want better initial bite and modulation
Common Questions
Can I use MT7 pads in my MT8?
No. The MT7 is a 4-piston brake using Type 8/9 pads. The MT8 is a 2-piston brake using Type 7 pads. They're not interchangeable.
Why does the MT8 use smaller pads than the MT7?
The MT8 is designed for XC racing where low weight is the priority. The MT7 is designed for gravity/enduro where power is the priority. Different goals, different designs.
Do I need to bed in new pads?
Yes! Do 20-30 firm stops from moderate speed, avoiding complete stops until the pads are bedded. Magura's powerful brakes especially benefit from proper bed-in.
