Still Can't Find Your Brake Model?

Common Issues:

Issue: My brake isn't listed above
Solution: Email us a photo of your brake caliper at help@loamgoat.com

Issue: I have mixed brake brands (e.g., Shimano lever, SRAM caliper)
Solution: Pad compatibility is determined by the CALIPER only, not the lever

Issue: My brake has numbers/codes but I don't know the model
Solution: Send us a photo - we can identify it

Issue: I'm not sure if I have 2-piston or 4-piston
Solution: Look at your caliper - count the pistons (circular discs) pushing the pads

How to Identify Your Brake Model

Method 1: Check Brake Lever

Most brake levers have the model printed on them:

  • Look on top of lever body
  • Check under the lever blade
  • Look on the reservoir cap

Method 2: Check Brake Caliper

Calipers usually have model numbers:

  • Look on the side of caliper body
  • Check the mounting area
  • Some have it on the bleed port

Method 3: Count Pistons

If you can see your pads:

  • 2 pistons = one piston on each side of rotor
  • 4 pistons = two pistons on each side of rotor

This helps narrow down which product you need.

Method 4: Measure Pad Size

If you have old pads:

  • Measure pad backing plate dimensions
  • Compare to our product listings
  • Match the shape

Method 5: Send Us a Photo

Can't figure it out? We're here to help:

  • Photo of old pads if you have them

Common Brake Pad Questions

Q: Can I use different pad brands than my brake brand?

Yes. Aftermarket pads like ours are made to OEM specifications. A Shimano brake works fine with any brand of Shimano-compatible pads.

Q: Will these pads fit my older brake model from 2010?

Maybe. Brake compatibility hasn't changed much, but some older models use discontinued pad shapes. Send us your brake model and year, we'll confirm.

Q: I have Shimano brakes but different front/rear models. Do I need different pads?

Probably yes. For example, XT M8120 (4-piston) and XT M8100 (2-piston) use different pad codes. Check each brake separately in this guide.

Q: My brake says "XTR" but the model number doesn't match your list.

Shimano has made multiple generations of XTR. The model number (like M9100, M9120) tells us which generation. Check your brake caliper for the exact model number.

Q: Are these pads compatible with e-bikes?

All our pads work on e-bikes. For e-bike use, we recommend Gravity or sintered compound for longest life and best heat management.

Q: Do I need to buy separate pads for front and rear?

If your front and rear brakes are the same model, you can use the same pads. Our pads are sold in 2 sets of 2 pairs (enough for two wheels). You're good to roll..

Q: My brake uses different pad codes (resin vs metal). Which do I need?

That's the compound choice:

  • Resin/Organic = Trail or Gravity compound
  • Metal/Sintered = Sintered compound

Check our Compound Guide to choose the right one for your riding.

Replacement Schedule

When to replace brake pads:

Less than 1mm compound remaining (measure from backing plate to pad surface)
Squealing that won't go away after cleaning/bed-in
Contamination (oil, grease) that can't be cleaned
Uneven wear (pads worn at angle)
Glazing (shiny, hard surface that won't sand off)

After You Order

What's included:

  • 2 sets of brake pads (enough for two wheels)
  • Spring/spacer (if applicable to your brake)
  • Installation is straightforward - see our Installation Guide

Don't forget:

  • Clean rotors with isopropyl alcohol before installing
  • Bed-in pads properly (critical for performance)
  • Replace pads when less than 1mm compound remains
