Frequently Asked Questions
Which pads for North Shore or Whistler riding?
Most local riders choose Sintered for durability in wet conditions or Gravity for better feel with cooling fins. If you ride year-round in the rain, Sintered lasts longer. If you want the best combination of modulation and power, Gravity is the winner. If you're overheating on long descents, get the finned Gravity pads.
My brakes feel spongy, will new pads help?
Probably not. A spongy brake lever usually means air in the system or contaminated brake fluid. You need to bleed your brakes. New pads only help if your current pads are worn down (less than 1mm of friction material remaining). Consult your manufacturer for bleeding instructions.
Do I need finned brake pads?
Finned pads have cooling fins that enhance heat dissipation. You need them if you ride e-bikes, do long descents (15+ minutes of braking), or experience brake fade. For most trail riding under 10 minutes, standard pads work great. Fins are available in Gravity and Trail organic compounds. You can also tell by looking at your rotor. See the guide here.
How do I know what brake brand I have?
Check your brake lever or caliper. The brand name is printed on the side. Common brands are Shimano, SRAM, Hope, and Magura. If you can't find the brand, send us a photo and we'll identify it for you. Use the chat option on the lower right side of the screen.
What if I order the wrong pads?
We accept returns within 30 days. If you're unsure about compatibility, contact us before ordering because we're riders too and happy to help you find the right pads for your setup. see our full policy here.
Do you ship to the US?
Yes. We ship to USA and internationally. Shipping costs are calculated at checkout. US orders typically arrive in 5-14 business days. See our shipping policy here.
Can I mix compounds (organic front, sintered rear)?
Yes, riders can run this setup. Organic front for modulation and sintered rear for durability. It's a practical choice if you burn through front pads quickly but want better feel. Just make sure both ends have enough power for your riding style.
Which Loam Goat pad is closest to OEM performance?
Our Trail organic pads match the feel and performance of most OEM organic pads (Shimano Resin, SRAM Organic, Hope organic). Our Gravity pads exceed OEM performance with more initial bite. Sintered pads offer similar performance to OEM metallic pads with better wet-weather durability.
Do I need finned brake pads?
Finned pads help if you ride e-bikes, do long descents (Whistler, big mountain passes), or experience brake fade with standard pads. The fins increase airflow and heat dissipation which improve longevity and braking performance. If you mostly ride shorter trails under 10 minutes of descending, standard pads work great. Fins are available in Gravity and Trail compounds on select models.
Are organic pads better than sintered pads?
Neither is “better” because it depends on your priorities. Organic pads (Gravity, Trail, and City options) offer superior modulation, quieter operation, and better feel. Sintered pads last longer in wet conditions at the expense of rotor wear. Most North Shore and Whistler riders choose sintered for durability or Gravity for performance.
Can I switch between organic and sintered pads?
Yes, but use a new rotor or clean your existing rotor first. Mixing pad compounds on the same rotor without cleaning causes glazing and inconsistent braking. Takes 30 seconds with fine sandpaper and a clean rag with rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner to prep the rotor surface.
